Caran was a Force-sensitive human male who arrived on the planet Reylea as an infant when his ship was shot down by the Knights of Ren, a group of dark side adepts, in an attempt to kidnap him for their master. After being found alone in the crashed ship by a young Avatar Korra, he was adopted into her family and raised as her younger brother, sharing a close bond with her. When he was six years old he accidentally discovered his connection to the Force, but no one except for Katara, the wife of the former Avatar, knew how to help him understand it—Katara kept the full extent of her knowledge secret, however, waiting for the proper time to reveal it.

Caran was a human male with light skin, green eyes, brown—formerly blonde—hair, and was relatively small in size, though partially due to his young age.
For much of his life, Caran has always adored and looked up to his adoptive older sister, Korra. He took after her fiery personality, finding excitement and joy in adventure and thrilling activities, though he was also more tempered and thoughtful than her about the consequences his actions could bring. Additionally, Caran possessed a good sense of humor and enthusiasm, similar to Korra, and was very loyal to his loved ones. He carried a strong bond with his adoptive family and close friends and was forever grateful to have been raised by his adoptive parents. Even so, he yearned greatly to know where he came from, who his birth parents were, and the mystery behind his unique abilities, which he felt no one else could understand well enough to help him.
In part, due to his connection to the Force Caran was very perceptive, easily able to get a read on what a person's true feelings were, though he did not need to use the Force to determine Korra's feelings because of his close relationship with her.
